Pray This When Your Mind Won't Slow Down

Your mind started racing the moment you woke up, and you can't slow it down on your own.

Philippians 4:7

When your mind races

Maybe your mind started racing the moment you woke up, and it still won't slow down. You've tried to talk yourself calm, and the thoughts keep coming. You don't have to settle them on your own before you pray. Let's bring this to God together.

Bring every worry to God

In Philippians chapter four, verses six and seven, Paul writes this to a church he loved.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7

Where to take the worry

Paul wrote those words in chains, still waiting to hear how his case would end. And in this same letter, he admits he's anxious himself, as he sends home a friend who'd nearly died.

Look at what he does with the worry. He gives it somewhere to go. In everything, he says, turn it into a request, and bring it to God with thanks.

Maybe you're lying there and the list has already started. The email you didn't answer. The school run. The meeting you're dreading. A result from the hospital you're still waiting on. Paul's word is "everything," so each of those can become a prayer, and it can be very plain. Father, I'm dreading this meeting. Please go with me into it. That counts.

The thanks sits right beside the asking. You can be worried and thankful in the same breath, because you're talking to Someone who has already been good to you.

And just before all this, Paul writes four short words.

The Lord is near.

Philippians 4:5

Near can mean close at hand, and it can mean coming soon. Both are true. So you aren't praying into an empty room.

Then comes the promise. Paul doesn't say the meeting will be cancelled or the test will come back clear. He says God's peace will guard your heart and your mind. Guard is a soldier's word, and Paul had soldiers guarding him as he wrote. Now he says God's own peace will stand watch over you, in Christ Jesus.

That peace belongs to Jesus. On the night before He died, He said to His friends,

Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.

John 14:27

Some mornings the thoughts will keep coming anyway. Even then, His peace is with you, right in the middle of them.

Peter wrote to believers under real pressure. Right after telling them to humble themselves before God, he says,

Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.

1 Peter 5:7

Handing your worry over is a humble thing to do. It admits you can't carry it by yourself. And Peter gives one reason to do it. He cares for you.

None of this means anxiety is a sign of weak faith. If racing thoughts meet you most mornings, seeing a doctor or a counselor isn't a failure to trust God either. You can bring that to Him too. And He doesn't wait for you to pray well. Because of Jesus, a tangled, half-finished prayer is welcome.

Praying with a racing mind

Let's pray. You can pray these words with me, out loud or in your heart.

Father, You're near. You were here before I opened my eyes, and nothing running through my head this morning surprises You. You hear every request, the big ones and the ones that feel too small to mention. You're the God of peace, and peace is Yours to give. Thank You that I can come to You through Jesus, who died and rose for me. Because of Him, I'm welcome here, racing mind and all.

I'll be honest with You. My mind started going the moment I woke up, and I can't slow it down on my own. I've tried. I've gone over the same conversations again and again. Some of what I'm worried about is real, and some of it may never happen. You know which is which, and most mornings I don't. And too often I pick up my phone before I've said a word to You.

Like the writer of Psalm ninety-four, I can say to You,

When anxiety overwhelms me, Your consolation delights my soul.

Psalm 94:19

It's overwhelming me this morning. Let Your comfort reach me. Slow me down enough to listen, and to know You're here with me.

So I'll do what You've asked, and turn these worries into requests. I bring You the conversation I keep rehearsing. Give me the right words, and the courage to say them kindly. Here's the money that won't stretch far enough. I haven't even opened the bills. Provide what I need, and show me the next sensible step. Here's the person I love who isn't well, and the result that hasn't come yet. Hold them, and hold me while we wait. And the thing I haven't said out loud to anyone, You know that too.

I'm leaving these with You. And even now, I thank You. Thank You for breath this morning, and for the people who love me. You've carried me through mornings like this before, and You're still here.

Father, I ask for Your peace, the peace “which surpasses all understanding”. Let it stand guard over my heart and my mind in Christ Jesus. It's the peace Your Son left with us, and I'm trusting His promise.

Isaiah gave Your people a song to sing, and part of it says,

You will keep in perfect peace the steadfast of mind, because he trusts in You.

Isaiah 26:3

I want a mind like that, one that rests on You. My thoughts won't hold still for me, so I'm trusting You with them. I open my hands. This day is Yours, and so am I.

By Your Spirit, turn my thoughts toward You when they start running ahead. And if I've picked a worry up again by nine o'clock, let me hand it back to You without shame. You're patient with me, and You always have been.

I pray for everyone who woke up like this today. For the parent getting the children ready while their mind is somewhere else. For the one who's been anxious so long they've stopped telling anyone. Be near to them, and give them Your peace. Give wisdom and kindness to the doctors and counselors who help them.

Now I'm heading into this day. When the phone buzzes and the list starts again, remind me that You're near. Help me turn the next worry into a prayer, and the one after that. Let me notice what's true and good today, and thank You for it. Stay with me, hour by hour, until I lie down tonight.

In Jesus' name, amen.

A moment with Him

Take a moment of quiet now, and bring Him whatever's in front of you today.

The Lord of peace

Hear this blessing from Paul's second letter to the Thessalonians.

Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.

2 Thessalonians 3:16
