The Spiritual Gift of Evangelism

The spiritual gift of evangelism is a Spirit-given desire and ability to talk about Jesus with people who don't yet believe and invite them to respond. Ephesians 4:11 names evangelists among Christ's gifts to His church.
“But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.”
What it is
Plenty of Christians freeze when a coworker asks why they go to church. A few light up. They find natural ways to bring Jesus into a conversation. The ones with this gift also know the gospel well enough to explain it plainly, and they like the people they're talking to.
Every believer is a witness, ready to explain "the reason for the hope that is in you" (1 Peter 3:15). Evangelists are also given "to equip the saints for works of ministry" (Ephesians 4:12), so part of the gift is helping others share their faith. Salvation is God's work, and the evangelist leaves the results to Him (1 Corinthians 3:6-7).
Where Scripture shows it
Philip is the only person the New Testament calls "the evangelist" (Acts 21:8). An angel of the Lord sent him to a desert road, where he met an Ethiopian official reading Isaiah. Philip asked, "Do you understand what you are reading?" (Acts 8:30). Starting from that passage, he "told him the good news about Jesus" (Acts 8:35), and the man asked to be baptized.
What it can look like
- Faith comes up with neighbors and coworkers, and you don't steer away from it.
- You can explain the gospel in a few plain sentences without church jargon.
- You welcome hard questions and admit it when you don't know.
- When someone comes to faith, your first thought is getting them into a church.
What to watch for
- Pressure or manipulation. Paul refused to "distort the word of God" (2 Corinthians 4:2).
- Treating people as projects. Keep loving them whether or not they respond.
- Counting conversions like a scorecard.
- Looking down on believers who share their faith more slowly than you do.
Ways to serve with it
- Write out how you came to trust Jesus, and practice telling it in two minutes.
- Invite a friend to read one of the Gospels with you.
- Serve at an outreach where people ask real questions, like a community meal or an ESL class.
- Pray daily for a few people by name who don't know Jesus.

Both. Jesus sent His followers to "make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19), and Ephesians 4:11 also names evangelists as a gift to the church. People with the gift often help everyone else share with more confidence.

Look for desire and fruit together. Do you think often about people who don't know Jesus, and do faith conversations tend to come up around you? Ask your pastor or small group what they see, and keep sharing either way.
