The Gift of Music and Worship

The gift of music and worship is the ability to help God's people praise Him, pray, and remember His truth through song. The New Testament gift lists don't name it, and every believer is called to worship. Scripture also shows God using skilled musicians to lead His people.
“Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.”
What it is
A good song leader can take a room of tired, distracted people and get them singing to God, and nobody leaves thinking about the leader. Others write songs that help a church remember what God has done, or play so well that the congregation sings more freely.
Paul tells churches to sing to one another (Ephesians 5:19). Music isn't in his lists of gifts, though he does say that when the church gathers, "everyone has a psalm or a teaching" (1 Corinthians 14:26).
Where Scripture shows it
When David brought the ark to Jerusalem, "Chenaniah the head Levite was the director of the music because he was highly skilled" (1 Chronicles 15:22). Later, the Levite musicians and their relatives were "trained and skillful in the songs of the LORD" (1 Chronicles 25:7).
At the temple's dedication, trumpeters and singers praised the LORD "with one voice" (2 Chronicles 5:13), and the glory of the LORD filled the house of God (2 Chronicles 5:14).
What it can look like
- On the worship team, you care more about the congregation singing than about your part.
- You choose songs whose words are true to Scripture, and you notice when lyrics are vague or wrong.
- You write songs that help people pray through hard seasons.
- You practice at home so your skill serves the church on Sunday.
What to watch for
- Performing for applause.
- Treating strong emotion as proof that God is present.
- Neglecting the words. Songs teach theology whether we intend them to or not.
- Pride in your skill, or envy of someone else's.

- Join your church's choir or worship team, even if you start in the back row.
- Visit a nursing home and sing familiar hymns with the residents.
- Mentor a younger musician on your church's team.
- Help with sound, slides, or lyrics so others can sing well.

Worship belongs to every Christian (Psalm 150:6). Some people also have an unusual ability to help others worship, and Scripture values that skill (1 Chronicles 25:7), even though Paul's lists don't name it.
Do you need musical talent to have this gift?
Many people with this gift are skilled musicians, and Scripture tells them to "play skillfully with a shout of joy" (Psalm 33:3). Others help a church worship by choosing songs, running sound, or writing lyrics. Anyone can sing to God, whatever their voice sounds like (Psalm 95:1).
